It really took 'em all the way to about 1971 0r 1972 to figure out Vietnam........and it took a tremendous body count. It takes a lot of financial loss coupled with a lot of death to mobilize the American public. It's sad, but I think it's true. We just aren't there yet, and this situation covers much more widespread intellectual ground and sociological terrain. So, it's harder to condense into simple terms. The entire philosophical bent of those who have been in power for most of the last 25 years is the basic problem. The results spread themselves all over the map, from poorly maintained infrastructure (highways, airports, levees) to the ever widening gap between the rich and the middle class (quickly becoming the newly poor), to the fiasco of the War For Oil And Ideological Masturbation in Iraq. I think, sad to say, that we need to break the 5000 or maybe even 10000 level in Iraqi war dead before Mr and Mrs America will really start to yell.
I may be wrong, though. As I sit here I'm listening to a report about Hurricane Rita, now a Level 5, heading toward Texas. If these morons demonstrate once again that they just don't have their shit together, things could move faster than I belive.
